Roles and Responsibilities

Background and context:


WWF-India’s sustainable business programme is aimed at working with business and industry in improving environmental and social outcomes. These engagements help corporates (1) understand the impact of their business/financing and supply chains on critical natural habitats, such as deforestation, extractives, fossil fuel emissions, and (2) find solutions that mitigate business risks and enhance business opportunities that promote positive conservation outcomes, such as sustainable infrastructure finance, water stewardship, climate innovation, renewable energy, plastics management.


Finance is a key lever for change in tackling some of the most pressing environmental challenges, as this requires a shift in capital deployment to more sustainable, low-carbon economic sectors. Environmental risks and opportunities are becoming increasingly important for financial decision-making. WWF India works across diverse stakeholders, such as banks, pension funds, asset managers, policy makers and regulators to promote better integration of environmental and social risk, as part of their financial decision-making and in accelerating sustainable investments that serve people and the planet.


The goal of the project in scope is to enhance the development and implementation of effective, high-quality linear infrastructure safeguards that protect people and nature from harm by ensuring that infrastructure development avoids adverse impacts on natural resources, the climate, social and ecological resilience to climate change, and social well-being and minimizes or mitigates unavoidable impacts, restores damaged ecosystems, and contributes to overall biodiversity gains. The project will target transportation and energy-related infrastructure such as roads, railways, and power lines. As part of this project, WWF-India is keen to work with a Specialist to increase effectiveness of environmental safeguards for projects funded by the private sector and international financial institutions.


As part of this effort, WWF-India is keen to identify and help accelerate adoption innovative financing mechanisms and other incentives that will encourage the uptake of safeguards by financial institutions in their lending and investing practices.


Job Profile:


The Specialist will provide technical support to WWF India and review the current environmental risk assessments, safeguard provisions, and implementation practices of key private sector actors and national/international financial institutions involved in linear infrastructure projects and lead conversations both with internal stakeholders and externally with working groups comprising financial institutions and engineering and consulting firms. The scope of work would include keeping up to date on developments in infrastructure finance, developing knowledge products, resource management, public/private partnerships, institutional and capacity development and strategy formulation.


  • Identify strategic partners and initiate dialogue, strategic areas of intervention with the infrastructure finance stakeholders, including associations, regulator, policymakers, national and international financial institutions, institutional investors, multilateral development organizations and engineering and consulting firms
  • Facilitate assessments of the safeguards currently used by the private sector, including railway, road, and power line design, construction, and operating companies, as well as consulting firms
  • Review the existing policies and guidelines of financial institutions that support the implementation of natural resource safeguards in linear infrastructure plans and projects as required or encouraged by financial institutions
  • Form working groups comprised of institutions with significant linear infrastructure investments, academia, civil society organizations, and government representatives to encourage the uptake of safeguards by financial institutions in their lending and investing practices
  • Facilitate development and delivery of informational materials, web-based modules, and related workforce training programs that further the professional development of LI practitioners
  • Inform on key trends within the thematic that have or could have implications on sustainability across the sector.
  • Represent WWF-India for some of the meetings with key stakeholders and also as part of workshop sessions
  • Engage high-level policy makers and corporate leaders for real impact using tailor-made solutions
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining excellent working relationships with senior Government officials, specifically regulators including RBI/SEBI/Ministry of Finance/Ministry of corporate affairs etc., associations like IBA, CII, FICCI, private sector players, civil society (national, and international) and other stakeholders
  • Participate in sector reviews, multi-stakeholder monitoring, audits and evaluations
  • Backstop the WWF India senior staff engaged in this thematic when they are not available for important meetings or events.
  • National and international travel may be required

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • MBA with 3-4 years of prior demonstrated experience in Infrastructure Finance/ sustainable finance/ sustainability consulting or
  • Graduate with 5-6 years of prior demonstrated experience in Infrastructure Finance/ sustainable finance/ sustainability consulting
  • Experience in infrastructure financing/ safeguards implementation, PPPs, sustainable project finance, financial modelling and analysis is a plus.
